Myofascial Release Q&A

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. The treatment is safe and effective for treating an array of conditions, including inflammation, sports injuries, repetitive stress, compressed nerves, and more. Myofascial release is effective for other conditions, such as:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee discomfort
  • Ankle pain
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder discomfort
  • Elbow pain
  • Wrist pain
  • Arthritis
  • Tension
  • Stiffness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Whiplash
  • Scarring

You might have more than one pain-causing condition that makes you a good candidate for myofascial release treatments.

Is myofascial release right for me?

The Total Acupuncture and Physical Therapy team tailors a treatment plan based on your individual needs. They review your medical history and symptoms, complete a physical exam, and may recommend  imaging procedures or other diagnostic tests.

What happens during myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a therapeutic technique used during physical therapy visits. During treatment, you relax comfortably on a treatment table. Your physical therapist locates fascia tissues throughout your body that are stiff or tight.

Then, they apply gentle pressure to the tense spots. Your therapist also stretches and kneads targeted tissues repeatedly for more tension relief. What should I expect after myofascial release?

After your treatment, you may notice temporary soreness. You might experience less pain and tension immediately. Your provider will let you know when to schedule your next session to reap the most benefits of myofascial release.
